President’s Turn
It is hard for me to accept, but we will soon be entering the month of October (as of this writing). Another year is rapidly coming to an end, and the election of the officers on the executive committee is only a month away. Yet, as of this writing, we will be without a president and a vice president at the end of the year. This means that the New Mexico Woodturners will also cease to exist, as our charter requires that we have a fully staffed executive committee. If we are to prevent this from occurring, we need you to step up. Both vacant positions need to attend the monthly club and board meetings (the board meetings are currently held remotely)…

Basic Hollowing Techniques
The challenges involved with turning enclosed vessel forms with small opening are many, because you can’t see the tip of the tool, and the cutting action happens a significant distance from the support of the tool rest. It takes time to develop the tool handling skills, and the dangers of big catches are very real. Tool shape and size are critical, and there are many poorly designed hollowing tools on the market, so it is easy to be confused about the cutting dynamics in relation to grain direction…
JCH Turning Event
The October JCH turning event will be a hands-on extension of Michael’s hollowing demonstration. The club has purchased a number of hollowing tools from Hunter Tools for your use if you would like to try your hand at hollowing without the up-front cost of purchasing specialized tools. Mike Hunter provided NMWT a substantial discount on these tools, so if you are in the market for hollowing tools, come give them a try.
We will have some blanks available, but if you have something you would like to work on, please bring it. And, as always, sharpening instruction and general assistance will be available.
