JCH Turning Event: Making Apples
Have you ever wanted to turn an apple? At least six of our members admitted they wanted to meet the challenge of turning apples. Under the guidance or tutelage of Scott Kershaw at JCH Industries on Saturday, January 10th, apples appeared, but I did not ask what varieties were created.
While Scott and his apple turners worked carefully, Mark, our guild president, kept busy demonstrating and guiding members interested in sharpening tools There was also sharing and learning specifically what to look for, anticipate, or watch out for when sharpening tools.
Mark also coordinated participants into an unannounced organized color activity. He had purchased new drives and live centers for all the guild's lathes. Participants joined in to match each to a lathe with colored tape as well as matching a tool kit also color keyed to a specific lathe.
As wood turners do, turners helping turners ended up in fun activities, knowledge and working for our guild. If my count was correct there was a total turnout of 17 members by the time we started cleaning up and loading the lathes around 2 p.m.
