26-04 Demo: Pyrography and Power Carving

Once a vessel is turned, cutting into the surface adds a whole new dimension to the appearance of the turning, and allows the turner to showcase their creativity. These alterations generally consist of either carving or piercing the surface, and may include the use electric tools or old-school hand tools. They may involve the use of tiny dental burs or larger power tools. They can even require the use of a floor model air compressor. Various techniques can transform the surface of the vessel or create small decorative designs. Some turners can even change the very shape of the vessel. Tom Durgin and Larry Linford will explain and demonstrate a number of these techniques on April 4.
