President’s Turn 26-07

The July NMWT meeting will take place on July 4th. The demonstration topic will be “Finishes including oils” (I don’t recall why oils were singled out, but that was the voted-on topic). Finishes may be those that are commercially available, or those that are home-made by you or someone else. For the purposes of this demonstration topic, abrasive pastes and sanding sealers will be considered as finishes. Anything that you use in the finishing process counts.

For this demonstration I will call on the membership to present your preferred finish or finishes, including why you like them, their strengths, and their weaknesses. For commercial finishes, it would be helpful to those of us who are more visually oriented, if you could bring in the retail packaging.

If you present a home-made finish, please bring me a printed copy of the recipe for use in the JCH turning event on the 11th. We will be showing how to make shellac, abrasive pastes, friction polish, hard wax oil finish, and whatever else we can come up with related to finishing.

The Emily Ford workshops were attended by 26 NMWT members. All seemed to have had a fun and educational experience. Many thanks go out to Ray Davis who not only allowed us to take over his shop but also assisted me in making many upgrades to the club’s trailer used to store our lathes. He also assisted in updating our grinder with a new stand and spacer to bring the Wolverine jig into proper configuration.

And one final expression of gratitude is due to Bert Tate, our treasure, who has successfully navigated the intricacies of the State of New Mexico bureaucracy to complete the transfer of ownership of the trailer to NMWT, completing the trailer registration, updating the club’s registration with the state, and then finally getting the new checking account set up with Nusenda. THANK YOU, Bert!
